Tokyo, April 4 (Jiji Press)--Japan's KDDI Corp. <9433> said Thursday that it will launch a smartphone settlement service using quick response, or QR, codes Tuesday.

With the "au Pay" service, the telecommunications carrier will join its rivals, Softbank Corp. <9434> and NTT Docomo Inc. <9437>, which have already started QR code-based smartphone settlement services.

KDDI's service will be available through the "au Wallet" electronic money app, which users reload with money from their bank and other accounts.

To promote the service, KDDI will run campaigns to give a 10 pct bonus on e-money added to au Wallet in exchange for au phone loyalty points and provide up to 26.5 pct of the amount of smartphone payments as reward points.

The company plans to increase the number of stores accepting payments by au Pay in cooperation with online shopping mall operator Rakuten Inc. <4755> and online flea market operator Mercari Inc. <4385>.
