Tokyo, April 9 (Jiji Press)--A Japanese Air Self-Defense Force F-35A fighter jet disappeared from radar over the Pacific Ocean Tuesday night, the ASDF said.

A search is under way for the stealth fighter jet, which may have crashed. A major in his 40s was on board the jet.

The jet, together with three other F-35As, took off from the ASDF's Misawa base in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, for a nighttime training fight around 7 p.m. (10 a.m. GMT).

About 25 minutes later, the jet disappeared from radar over the Pacific Ocean about 135 kilometers east of the Misawa base. No distress signal has been received.

Thirteen F-35As are deployed at the Misawa base.
