Economy Science Technology

Tokyo, April 10 (Jiji Press)--Sharp Corp. <6753> unveiled a prototype of its foldable smartphone display panel at a press event in Tokyo on Wednesday, aiming to put it on the market within a few years.

Sharp would be the first Japanese company to release a foldable display. Currently, only a handful of foreign companies supply such displays.

The prototype, based on an OLED (organic light emitting diode) panel, can be folded both inward and outward.

Sharp plans to supply the foldable display for smartphones including its own products.

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. and China's Huawei Technologies Co. have each revealed plans to launch foldable smartphones.
