Tokyo, April 12 (Jiji Press)--E-commerce giant Amazon Japan G.K. on Friday announced a hike in the annual membership fee for its Amazon Prime service by 1,000 yen to 4,900 yen.

The new monthly fee stands at 500 yen, up 100 yen, according to the Tokyo-based arm of Amazon.com Inc. of the United States.

The new fees came into force immediately for new members. To existing ones, the higher prices will start applying when they renew their memberships on or after May 17.

Amazon Prime customers not only get free-of-charge, same-day, specified-time deliveries but also online access to video and music content.

This is the Japanese arm's first Amazon Prime fee rise since the service began in 2007.
