Tokyo, April 16 (Jiji Press)--A small eruption occurred at Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on Tuesday afternoon, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

According to the agency, the eruption happened at the No. 1 crater of the Nakadake peak of the volcano around 6:28 p.m. (9:28 a.m. GMT).

The agency issued an eruption notice at 6:32 p.m., warning of large volcanic rocks and pyroclastic flows within a one-kilometer radius of the crater. This was the first eruption at the 1,506-meter Nakadake since Oct. 8, 2016.

No one is believed to have been hurt in the eruption, according to the Kumamoto prefectural police and fire departments.

"We couldn't visually confirm any falling ash," said an official of the city government of Aso.
