Runaway Car Driven by Elderly Man Kills 2 in Tokyo
Tokyo, April 19 (Jiji Press)--A runaway car driven by an 87-year-old man killed a woman, 31, and her three-year-old daughter, and injured eight, including the man himself, in the Higashiikebukuro district in Tokyo's Toshima Ward on Friday.
The woman, Mana Matsunaga, a resident of Toshima Ward, and the girl, Riko, were declared dead after being taken to hospital in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Riko was sitting behind her mother, who was riding a bicycle.
In the incident which occurred around 12:25 p.m. (3:25 a.m. GMT), the passenger car crashed into a garbage truck and then into another truck.
The male driver, from Tokyo's Itabashi Ward, told the police that the vehicle's accelerator became stuck.
The injured people ranged in age from their 40s to 90s. Three of them suffered serious injuries, but these are not life-threatening.
