Voting under Way in Japan Lower House By-Elections, Local Polls

Tokyo, April 21 (Jiji Press)--Voting is under way in two by-elections for the House of Representatives, the lower chamber the Diet, Japan's parliament, and the second round of quadrennial unified local elections on Sunday.

Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. (10 p.m. Saturday GMT).

The Lower House by-elections are closely watched as a precursor to this summer's triennial election for the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of the Diet.

The results of the polls could affect strategies of ruling and opposition camps for the upcoming Upper House election, political analysts said.

The by-elections are the first parliamentary polls since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe won a third straight three-year term as president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party last September.
