8 Major Automakers See Slight Rise in FY '18 Domestic Output
Tokyo, April 25 (Jiji Press)--Combined domestic vehicle production by eight major Japanese automakers in fiscal 2018 rose 0.7 pct from the previous year to 9,253,374 units, according to their data released Thursday.
The total for the year through March increased for the third consecutive year and topped the nine-million mark as in the previous year.
Sales of sport utility vehicles and minivehicles were brisk at six automakers other than Nissan Motor Co. <7201> and Subaru Corp. <7270>, both of which had product quality scandals.
Nissan's domestic output plunged 8.6 pct due to a drop in shipments to North America and Europe. The weakness also reflected turmoil caused by the arrest and indictment of its former chairman, Carlos Ghosn.
Subaru's domestic production tumbled 12.0 pct, hit by a factory shutdown due to a component defect.
