New York, April 29 (Jiji Press)--U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres suggested Monday that he hopes to visit the atom-bombed western Japan city of Hiroshima in 2020.

He was responding to an invitation offered by Hidehiko Yuzaki, governor of Hiroshima Prefecture, during their meeting at the U.N. headquarters in New York, according to Yuzaki.

Guterres expressed his hope to visit Hiroshima in 2020, explaining that scheduling a visit in 2019 would be difficult, Yuzaki told reporters.

Guterres became the first U.N. secretary-general to visit Nagasaki, southwestern Japan, in August 2018 to attend an annual peace memorial ceremony.

At his meeting with Yuzaki, Guterres expressed regret that he was unable to visit Hiroshima that year, the governor said.
