Osaka World Expo Assn Fully Kicks Off

Tokyo, May 15 (Jiji Press)--An association preparing for the 2025 World Exposition in the western Japan city of Osaka fully launched operations on Wednesday, selecting Hiroyuki Ishige, former head of the Japan External Trade Organization, as its secretary-general.

Ishige was elected to the post at the day's general meeting in Tokyo of the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition, comprising public- and private-sector representatives.

The move came before the government designates the association as the organizer for the expo, possibly later this month, based on a special law for the event enacted last month.

Relevant ministries and agencies will send officials to the association to help it draw up plans for the event.

At a board meeting held after the general meeting, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Hiroshige Seko called on the business circle to collect funds for the construction of facilities for the expo, to be held on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka Bay.
