Panel Calls for Appointing Statistics Inspectors at Ministries

Tokyo, May 16 (Jiji Press)--A panel of experts has drafted measures to prevent the recurrence of irregularities in government statistics, including appointments of officials in charge of reviewing statistics at ministries from an independent standpoint, it was learned on Thursday.

The panel, under the internal affairs ministry's Statistics Commission, presented the draft measures at a meeting on the day.

The draft also calls for setting procedures to deal with statistical errors, promoting the use of online surveys and developing rules on the storage of survey data.

At the panel meeting, a participant said the government should employ external personnel to train officials in statistical skills, while another highlighted the need to utilize information and communications technology to improve data management and other related operations.

The internal affairs ministry plans to formally adopt preventive measures as early as July.
