Tokyo, May 27 (Jiji Press)--Nissan Motor Co. <7201> welcomes a possible merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Renault SA, Hiroto Saikawa, president and chief executive officer of the Japanese automaker, said Monday.

This is "positive news for the future as a whole because it provides greater opportunities," Saikawa told reporters in Tokyo.

"It would be good for the scope of the alliance to widen," he said, referring to Nissan's current partnership with Renault of France and Japan's Mitsubishi Motors Corp. <7211>.

The comments by Saikawa came after Fiat Chrysler, an Italian-U.S. automaker, on Monday proposed a merger with Renault.

He said Nissan wants to discuss the matter with Renault and Mitsubishi. Top executives of the three automakers are scheduled to meet in Japan on Wednesday.
