Schoolgirl among Dead in Stabbing Rampage near Tokyo
Kawasaki, Kanagawa Pref., May 28 (Jiji Press)--Nineteen people, mainly schoolchildren, were stabbed by a man holding a knife in each hand in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, just south of Tokyo, Tuesday morning, with two of the victims, including an 11-year-old girl in the six grade, later confirmed dead.
The girl, Hanako Kuribayashi, was from the city of Tama in western Tokyo. The other fatal victim was Satoshi Oyama, the 39-year-old father of a different student from Tokyo's Setagaya Ward.
The Kanagawa prefectural police department detained the attacker, who is believed to be a 51-year-old man from Kawasaki. The man was taken to hospital as he had stabbed himself in the neck and was later confirmed dead from the injury.
The police department is investigating the case on murder charges, suspecting that the man stabbed the victims at random.
The suspect is seen to have stabbed the 39-year-old man in the back and then attacked the children of Caritas Elementary School, who were lined up at a bus stop. The elementary school is located in Kawasaki.
