Amazon Japan Ties Up with Supermarket Chain Life

Tokyo, May 30 (Jiji Press)--E-commerce giant Amazon Japan G.K. said Thursday it has formed an alliance with supermarket operator Life Corp. <8194> for a fresh food delivery service.

Orders will be accepted through Amazon's Prime Now paid-membership service, and products will be delivered from Life's physical outlets to customers as soon as within two hours.

The new service will be launched by the end of this year in some areas in Tokyo.

The alliance may become a catalyst for similar moves by other online retailers and physical store operators at a time when delivery service demand is growing in line with a rise in the number of double-income households in Japan, industry sources said.

Users of the new service by Amazon and Life will place orders for fresh food through a special smartphone app. Life staff members will pick up the ordered items from store shelves, pack them and hand them to Amazon deliverers.
