Japan's Post-Tiananmen Diplomacy Still Questioned
Tokyo, June 4 (Jiji Press)--Japan was the first in the Western world to resume official development assistance to China after a freeze imposed for the June 1989 crackdown on the Tiananmen Square protests.
Tokyo justified the move by stressing the importance of preventing China from being isolated. Observers still question whether the post-Tiananmen diplomacy was appropriate, now China has become a major power challenging the world order.
