Rakuten Mobile, NEC to Build 5G Network in Japan
Tokyo, June 5 (Jiji Press)--Rakuten Mobile Inc. said Wednesday that it and NEC Corp. <6701> will work together to build a fifth-generation, or 5G, wireless communications network across Japan.
The mobile carrier under the wing of Rakuten Inc. <4755> and the electronics maker will codevelop a compact and low-cost radio antenna for base stations for installation at about 16,000 locations by the end of March 2025.
The project is seen costing tens of billions of yen.
Rakuten Mobile and NEC aim to lead a shift to the 5G format with Japanese technologies, as procurement from Chinese telecommunications equipment giant Huawei Technologies Co. is becoming difficult amid the escalating trade dispute between China and the United States.
Rakuten Mobile and NEC will release a radio unit mounted with the 3.7-gigahertz antenna around June 2020, when Rakuten Mobile hopes to start its 5G services.
