Japanese Empress Emerita Michiko to Take Heart Exam
Tokyo, June 7 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Empress Emerita Michiko will soon receive a heart examination at the hospital of the Imperial Household Agency, after a recent blood test revealed increased levels of brain natriuretic peptide, a type of hormone, the agency said Friday.
Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko take a walk within the Imperial Palace every morning.
But the Empress Emerita often gets out of breath easily, officials of the agency said, pointing out that the symptom started to become notable earlier this year.
The Empress Emerita took the blood test early this week as part of a regular health examination.
BNP is secreted when a heart experiences stress. The levels of the hormone rise when the cardiac function deteriorates, so its readings are used as an indicator to assess the possibility of heart failure.
