Tokyo Unveils 2020 Games Waterfront Competition Venue

Tokyo, June 15 (Jiji Press)--The Tokyo metropolitan government on Saturday showed the media a venue for rowing and canoe events in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

The Sea Forest Waterway's course in the Tokyo Bay area is about 2,000 meters long and 200 meters wide, meeting the global standards. The construction work started in July 2016 and finished on May 31 this year.

The facility with the audience seats of some 2,000 can accommodate up to 16,000 people. It also has wave absorbers and windbreaks.

The construction work was suspended because the possible use of the existing Naganuma Boat Race Course in Tome, Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, was considered in order to reduce Tokyo Games costs.

A plan to build the Sea Forest Waterway was finally decided with a condition to reduce costs such as by halving the size of a roof covering the audience area.
