Japanese Empress Emerita Undergoes Cataract Surgery
Tokyo, June 16 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Empress Emerita Michiko underwent cataract surgery on her right eye at a Tokyo hospital Sunday.
The operation was successful, and she returned home in the evening, informed sources said.
The Empress Emerita will have surgery on the other eye on June 23.
According to the Imperial Household Agency sources, she began to have difficulty seeing things a few years ago.
Cataract operations became necessary as her symptoms progressed over the past one or two years. But it was difficult to schedule the surgery before the April 30 abdication of Emperor Emeritus Akihito, the sources said.
