Tokyo, June 20 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. has reached a basic agreement with a company in North America to launch talks over the proposed sale of 15 70-seater models of the SpaceJet, the first Japanese-developed small passenger aircraft.

The agreement was reached on Wednesday.

If the deal is clinched, it will be the first since 2016 for the aircraft formerly called the Mitsubishi Regional Jet and the first ever for its 70-seater models.

Mitsubishi Aircraft, a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. <7011> unit based in Toyoyama, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, has not revealed details about the North American client. It is aiming for the start of delivery in 2024.

The company has so far received orders for a total of 407 units of the 90-seater SpaceJet models, including provisional contracts.
