Japan Convenience Store Sales Up 1.7 pct in May
Tokyo, June 20 (Jiji Press)--Convenience stores sales in Japan in May rose 1.7 pct from the year before to 866.9 billion yen on a same-store basis, up for the seventh consecutive month, an industry group said Thursday.
Cold products, such as ice creams, soft drinks and "hiyashi chuka" cold noodle dishes, sold well thanks to hot weather and brisk demand during the 10-day Golden Week holiday period, according to the Japan Franchise Association.
Sales of prepared foods such as "bento" boxed meals and frozen foods were also strong.
Cigarette sales were recovering from a slump caused by a tax increase in October last year.
The number of customers fell 1.1 pct, the third straight month of drop.
