Iran Ambassador Calls U.S. Talks Offer Sham
Tokyo, June 24 (Jiji Press)--The U.S. government's call for dialogue with Iran is a sham, Iranian Ambassador to Japan Morteza Rahmani Movahed said Monday.
If U.S. President Donald Trump is a sincere person, he should return to the 2015 multilateral nuclear agreement and lift sanctions on Iran, Rahmani told a press conference at the Japan National Press Club in Tokyo.
The Iranian government announced in May that it would stop abiding by some of its commitments in the nuclear deal as a countermeasure against the U.S. withdrawal last year.
Rahmani stressed that Iran is following the international agreement, saying the measures are within its framework.
Tensions between the United States and Iran heightened after the Trump administration imposed sanctions on Iran and Iran shot down a U.S. surveillance drone. But the ambassador said his country does not want a military conflict.
