Mother Gets Suspended Sentence in Case of Fatal Abuse of Daughter
Chiba, June 26 (Jiji Press)--Chiba District Court handed down a suspended prison sentence to Nagisa Kurihara on Wednesday for failing to stop her husband abusing their daughter, Mia, who died in January at the age of 10 at their home in the city of Noda, Chiba Prefecture, eastern Japan.
Nagisa, 32, was charged with assisting her husband in assaulting the child. She was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, suspended for five years. Public prosecutors had demanded a two-year prison term.
Presiding Judge Kenji Koike said Nagisa's level of involvement in the high-profile case "was not small."
Koike said Nagisa did not contact the police although she was aware that her husband, Yuichiro, 41, was violent toward their daughter.
"You were the only person who could have offered a helping hand (to Mia) and were asked for help (by her), but you did not to face up to your responsibilities in order to avoid breaking up the family, and instead chose to take your husband's side," the judge said.
