Tokyo, June 28 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese Olympic Committee has elected Executive Board senior member Yasuhiro Yamashita, an Olympic judo gold medalist, as president to succeed outgoing Tsunekazu Takeda.

Yamashita, 62, assumed the post Thursday after the day's JOC Council and Executive Board meetings to revamp its leadership team ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympics.

Takeda, 71, who is under French investigation over alleged bribery related to Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Games, retired as his term expired Thursday.

"I feel a huge responsibility," Yamashita told a press conference. "I hope to make a success of the games in close cooperation with all people involved in the games."
