Tokyo, July 1 (Jiji Press)--Major Japanese convenience store chains Seven-Eleven Japan Co. and FamilyMart Co. each launched their own smartphone payment services on Monday.

The moves by the retailers are expected to further intensify competition among similar services, already involving information technology companies and financial firms.

Seven-Eleven Japan President Fumihiko Nagamatsu has stressed that the convenience store chain is visited by 22 million customers a day, giving an advantage to its 7pay smartphone payment service.

FamilyMart President Takashi Sawada has expressed the chain's eagerness to reduce its employees' workload and offer convenience for customers, through its FamiPay cashless payment system.

Both services allow users to make payments by presenting at cashier counters barcodes displayed on their smartphones.
