S. Korea to Take Diplomatic Measure against Japan's Export Controls

Politics

Seoul, July 4 (Jiji Press)--The South Korean government decided Thursday to launch diplomatic action to make Japan repeal its stricter controls on semiconductor materials exports to South Korea.

The South Korean presidential office announced the decision, which was made at a meeting of the standing committee of the National Security Council.

At the meeting, the government concluded that the Japanese measure is of retaliatory nature and clearly violates the rules of the World Trade Organization and the international law.

A senior government official said that filing a complaint with the WTO is one of the concrete options being considered by Seoul.

South Korea plans to explain to major countries that the Japanese measure is unjustifiable and goes against the principle of free trade, the official added.
