Sharp to Close 2 Bases in Western Japan
Osaka, July 5 (Jiji Press)--Sharp Corp. <6753> will close its Katsuragi base in Nara Prefecture and Hirano base in Osaka Prefecture, both western Japan, within fiscal 2020, it was learned Friday.
The electronics maker will consolidate the functions of the two bases at its Yao base, also in Osaka. No employees will be dismissed.
The Katsuragi base, which has about 300 workers, conducts research and development of solar panels.
Some 500 employees work at the Hirano base, which handles sales of multifunction printers and has a facility to repair home electronics.
The closure will not only reduce indirect costs but also help Sharp improve its product development capabilities because engineers will be transferred to the Yao base, a hub for research and development of home electronics with cutting-edge technologies.
