Third Person Arrested over 7pay Hack
Tokyo, July 12 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo police arrested a female Chinese part-time worker of a Seven-Eleven Japan Co. outlet on Friday on suspicion of purchasing goods at the convenience store by illegally accessing someone else's account for the company's 7pay smartphone payment service.
Arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department for alleged theft was Yu Huiling, a 21-year-old student.
She is alleged to have illegally accessed the 7pay account of a Tokyo man in his 40s and bought some 30,000 yen's worth of items including e-cigarettes at the Seven-Eleven Japan store in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward between 10 p.m. July 4 (1 p.m. GMT) and 12:45 a.m. July 5. She has admitted the charges.
According to sources in the police, a Chinese friend of Yu on July 3 asked her via WeChat, a Chinese social networking app, to buy cigarettes through 7pay, offering to pay her financial rewards. The friend then sent Yu an ID and a password for the 7pay service.
The suspect told the police that she was planning to send the purchased items to the friend using a courier service, the sources said.
