Japan's Princess Mako Visits Nursing Home in Peru
Lima, July 12 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Princess Mako, now on an official tour of Peru, visited on Friday a medical clinic and an elderly care home run mainly by Peruvians of Japanese descent and cheered residents.
The facilities, founded by Asociacion Emmanuel, is located in a poverty area in Callao, near Lima, the capital of Peru.
Princess Mako, the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, shook hands with elderly residents who gathered in a dining hall, asking them how they spend time there.
Haruko Oshiro, 87, a second-generation Peruvian of Japanese ancestry, said she does not understand Japanese. Princess Mako replied, "I do not understand Spanish well," drawing laughter from people around them.
Later on Friday, Princess Mako visited the Amano Textile Museum in Lima, famous among archaeology enthusiasts.
