Japan to Make Reconstruction Monuments for 2020 Games
Tokyo, July 17 (Jiji Press)--The organizing committee for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics unveiled Wednesday a plan to create monuments symbolizing the reconstruction of northeastern Japan areas devastated by the March 2011 disaster by employing aluminum used in temporary housing for evacuees.
Postdisaster reconstruction is a key theme for the Tokyo Games.
One monument each will be created in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, the three prefectures hit hardest by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Fukushima is also home to Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.'s <9501> Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant damaged heavily in the disaster.
About 2 tons of aluminum recycled from temporary houses built in the three prefectures will be used to create the monuments.
Students from Tokyo University of the Arts, and junior high and high school students in the disaster areas will produce the monuments.
