At Least 16 Killed, Over 35 Injured in Explosion at Kyoto Animation Studio
Kyoto, July 18 (Jiji Press)--An animation studio in Kyoto blazed up after an explosion on Thursday, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 35, according to police and other sources.
The death toll from the suspected arson may rise, as more than 10 people have been in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, the sources said.
The Kyoto Prefectural Police Headquarters said that seven of 73 people who were in the No. 1 studio of Kyoto Animation Co. at the time of the explosion were left unharmed while 36 others were injured and taken to hospital.
According to the western Japan city's fire department, there was an emergency call around 10:35 a.m. (1:35 a.m. GMT) reporting that the animation studio in Fushimi Ward was on fire following the sound of a blast.
The police said they held a 41-year-old man some 100 meters away from the studio.
