First Pro Baseball Team in Okinawa Being Launched
Naha, Okinawa Pref., July 18 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo-based Base Inc., which mainly handles athlete management, launched on Thursday a company to operate a professional baseball team in the southernmost Japan prefecture of Okinawa.
The move was announced at a press conference at the Okinawa prefectural government office in Naha, the capital of Okinawa. The team, named the Ryukyu Blue Oceans, will be the first pro baseball outfit in the island prefecture.
Yasushi Tao, 65, the inaugural manager of the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, a professional baseball club in the Pacific League under the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization, or NPB, serves as executive adviser of the operator of the Okinawa team.
The team will seek to join NPB, the highest-level pro baseball management body in Japan, in the future.
The Blue Oceans will have home fields in the cities of Ginowan and Urasoe, with its secondary home ground in the city of Miyakojima. Its manager and coaches will be announced in October or later.
