Japan Tobacco to Ax 113-Year-Old Golden Bat Cigarette Brand

Economy

Tokyo, July 25 (Jiji Press)--Japan Tobacco Inc. <2914> will terminate sales of its Golden Bat cigarettes in autumn, stubbing out the brand's 113-year history.

JT will stop selling Golden Bat cigarettes, released in 1906, in or after October this year as soon as it runs out of stock.

The company determined that continuing the sales would be difficult due to a planned tax rate change.

Golden Bat and other cigarettes classified as "former third-class" products are subject to lower tobacco tax than other products, making them an affordable choice. However, the preferential treatment will be scrapped at the end of September.

The former third-class category was established by JT's predecessor, Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corp.
