4 Major Japanese Dept. Store Operators Log Lower Sales in July

Tokyo, Aug. 1 (Jiji Press)--All four major Japanese department store operators logged year-on-year declines in same-store sales in July, preliminary data from the companies showed Thursday.

The poor performance reflected sluggish sales of summer clothes caused by prolonged rain.

Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. <3099> saw a 4.7 pct decrease in its same-store sales due to weak demand for summer dresses and sandals.

Sales were down 3.6 pct at J. Front Retailing Co. <8233>, 2.6 pct at Sogo & Seibu Co., a unit of Seven & i Holdings Co. <3382>, and 1.3 pct at Takashimaya Co. <8233>.

"Shopping appetite among visitors from China is apparently waning," an Isetan Mitsukoshi official said.
