Japan Urges China to Resolve Hong Kong Crisis through Dialogue
Beijing, Aug. 20 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono on Tuesday expressed concerns over the crisis in Hong Kong and urged China to de-escalate the tensions at an early date through dialogue.
It is very important for Hong Kong to flourish in a free and open manner under the "one country, two systems" formula, Kono told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at a meeting near Beijing.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Kono said, "I believe we've shared the recognition that the situation must go to calm down through dialogue." Kono did not say how Wang reacted.
The two foreign ministers agreed to step up preparations, including high-level dialogue, for a state visit to Japan by Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for spring next year.
Kono and Wang shared the recognition that Japan and China should ensure stable progress in bilateral ties through a success of Xi's visit.
