Yokohama Announces Bid to Host Casino Resort
Yokohama, Aug. 22 (Jiji Press)--The Yokohama municipal government on Thursday announced its bid to host a casino-featuring integrated resort in the city near Tokyo, aiming to open such a facility in the latter half of the 2020s.
A casino resort is expected to increase the number of tourists to the Kanagawa Prefecture city and improve its finances, the municipal government said.
Up to three such resorts will be allowed to open across the country under a law enacted last year to introduce casinos in Japan.
So far, several other local governments have expressed their willingness to be hosts. They include the pair of Osaka Prefecture and the city of Osaka, western Japan, neighboring Wakayama Prefecture and Nagasaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan.
The candidate site for Yokohama is Yamashita Pier, a 47 hectare-area in Naka Ward adjacent to Yamashita Park that is a popular tourism spot.
