London, Aug. 22 (Jiji Press)--U.S. casino operator Las Vegas Sands Corp. said Thursday that it will no longer pursue an opportunity to be allowed to operate a casino-featuring integrated resort in the western Japan city of Osaka.

The company said it is focusing development opportunities in Japan on Tokyo and nearby Yokohama.

"We think an investment in Tokyo or Yokohama gives us the best opportunity," Las Vegas Sands Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Sheldon Adelson said in a press release.

The comments by the company came after the Yokohama municipal government earlier in the day announced its bid to host a casino resort.

Las Vegas Sands is considered one of leading candidates to operate casino resorts in Japan, where up to three such resorts will be allowed to open under a law enacted last year.
