Event Held in Tokyo Year before 2020 Paralympics

Tokyo, Aug. 25 (Jiji Press)--The organizing committee for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games held a commemorative event Sunday, exactly a year to go until the opening of the Paralympics.

The Paralympics will run from Aug. 25 to Sept. 6 next year, with a record 4,400 athletes expected to participate. A total of 540 events of 22 sports are scheduled to take place.

Tokyo will be the first city to host Paralympics for a second time. The previous occasion was in 1964.

Japanese Para-Sports Association leader Mitsunori Torihara said that Aug. 25 will be designated Japan Paralympic Day.

"We'll channel the increasing momentum into the (Paralympic) movement, which will be a legacy of the upcoming games," Torihara said.
