Event Held to Promote "Host Towns" for Tokyo Games

Tokyo, Aug. 27 (Jiji Press)--An event was held in Tokyo on Tuesday to promote Japanese municipalities registered as "host towns" to welcome athletes, officials and others from countries and regions participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

"With residents of the host towns feeling involved in the Olympics and Paralympics, the Tokyo Games will be nationwide events," Shunichi Suzuki, minister for the quadrennial sporting events, said.

At Tuesday's event, host town municipalities ran booths showcasing their charm points. The central Japan city of Shizuoka, which will serve as a host town for Spain and Taiwan, offered green tea, a local specialty, to visitors at its booth.

An exhibition was also held to show gratitude for the support Japan received when its northeastern region was hit hard by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

So far, 416 municipalities have been registered as host towns.
