Identities of Remaining 25 KyoAni Arson Victims Released

Kyoto, Aug. 27 (Jiji Press)--The Kyoto prefectural police department released Tuesday the identities of 25 of the 35 people who were left dead in the arson attack on a Kyoto Animation Co. studio last month.

The 25 victims were aged between 21 and 49, including Shoko Ikeda, whose real name was Shoko Terawaki, a 44-year-old executive of Kyoto Animation, who designed characters for "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya," a popular television animation series by the company, known as KyoAni.

The victims also included Tatsunari Maruko, 31, who worked for "Sound! Euphonium," an anime title released by KyoAni.

The police department also released bereaved families' opinions about disclosing the individual names of the victims in news reports. Five families have agreed to the use of victims' real names in news stories.

Ryoji Nishiyama, an officer at the prefectural police department said it took the police more than one month to disclose the names of all the victims due in part to difficulty in identifying them. Also, the psychological traumas of people concerned were so deep that it required long periods of time for them to accept the deaths of the victims, he said.
