Yokohama, Aug. 29 (Jiji Press)--U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday alerted the international community to the accelerating pace of climate change.
"It is clear that climate change is running faster than what we are," Guterres told reporters after attending a climate meeting held on the sidelines of the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development, or TICAD 7, in Yokohama, south of Tokyo.
"I myself visited Mozambique and saw the consequences" of a powerful cyclone, he said, referring to the devastating effects of global warming.
"We see the dramatic melting of ice caps in Greenland or in Antarctica or in the Arctic...devastating fires in Siberia or in other parts of the Arctic circle...(and) what's happening in the Amazon," he cautioned. "We live in a climate emergency."
Greenhouse gas emissions in Africa are extremely low compared with other parts of the world, but "Africa is on the front line as suffering the devastating impact of the consequences of climate change," Guterres said.
