S. Korean Lawmakers' Takeshima Visit Unacceptable: Suga

Politics

Tokyo, Sept. 2 (Jiji Press)--The recent visit by South Korean lawmakers to the Japanese-claimed Sea of Japan islands of Takeshima is unacceptable, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Monday.

The visit on Saturday is "not acceptable at all as Takeshima is Japan's inherent territory, based on historical facts and international law," Suga told a news conference. The Japanese government has already lodged a protest over the visit.

The group of islets in question, located off Shimane Prefecture, western Japan, is called Dokdo in South Korea.

Meanwhile, Suga declined to comment on remarks made in response to the South Korean lawmakers' move by Hodaka Maruyama of NHK kara Kokumin wo Mamoru To (Party to Protect the People from NHK).

In his Twitter feed, the Japanese House of Representatives lawmaker said that "war is the only way to get back" the South Korean-controlled Takeshima. He has already aired a similar opinion over the Russian-occupied disputed northern islands off Hokkaido.
