Tokyo, Sept. 8 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Empress Emerita Michiko underwent a successful surgery to remove cancer in her left breast on Sunday.
The operation, conducted at the University of Tokyo Hospital, ended in about four hours.
The former Empress, 84, entered an operating room at 10 a.m. (1 a.m. GMT) to receive the surgery under general anesthesia and returned to her hospital room soon after 2 p.m. The operation was conducted jointly by doctors from the Shizuoka Cancer Center and the university hospital.
