WTO Appellate Body Rules against S. Korean Duties on Japan

Tokyo, Sept. 11 (Jiji Press)--The World Trade Organization's Appellate Body ruled Tuesday that South Korea's antidumping duties on imports of valves for pneumatic transmission from Japan violate WTO rules.

The Appellate Body advised Seoul to take corrective steps over the duties, a victory for Japan, which filed a complaint against the South Korean measure in March 2016.

If South Korea declines to comply with the advice, Japan will be allowed to take countermeasures.

The ruling by the Appellate Body demonstrated again that the abuse of protectionist trade measures is not acceptable under WTO rules, Japanese trade minister Hiroshige Seko said.

Japan plans to urge South Korea to remove the duties swiftly, sources familiar with the situation said. If South Korea declines the request, the dispute over the duties may become another source of tensions between the countries.
