20 Pct in Japan Subscribing to Video Streaming Services: Jiji Survey

Tokyo, Sept. 17 (Jiji Press)--The share of people in Japan subscribing to online video streaming services topped 20 pct in a recent Jiji Press survey, with a much higher number among younger generations.

The share of respondents using video streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime stood at 20.3 pct in the August survey, up 4.6 percentage points from the previous survey conducted a year earlier.

Among respondents aged between 18 and 29, the proportion came to 37.5 pct, up 15.9 points. Online streaming services enable users to watch movies and dramas on their smartphones and other devices.

Asked how often they go to movie theaters, 45.0 pct of respondents, the largest share, said not at all, followed by once a year or less, at 22.0 pct.

When asked whether they go to DVD rental shops to rent movies, 63.2 pct said not at all, 8.2 pct said about once every six months and 8.0 pct said once a year or less.
