Tokyo, Oct. 1 (Jiji Press)--The Japan Press Research Institute on Tuesday started releasing online photo news pieces published in wartime by Domei News Agency, the predecessor of Jiji Press and Kyodo News.
The institute, chaired by former Jiji Press President Yutaka Nishizawa, first released 1,277 pieces published between 1937 and 1945 for posting at factories and schools, after digitizing the data.
The articles, with censorship stamps, offer insights into wartime situations with their wide coverage of politics, military affairs and other issues. Four to six pieces are believed to have been published every day at the time, with a circulation of some 100,000 copies.
The institute has some 1,500 such items. It will continue collecting such photo news pieces and will release them in stages.
It also released international news articles published by Domei News Agency between August 1944 and December 1945. It plans to make public English news articles published for overseas readers.
