Govt Still Seeks Izumisano Removal from Hometown Donations

Tokyo, Oct. 3 (Jiji Press)--The internal affairs ministry said Thursday that it maintains its decision to exclude the western Japan city of Izumisano from a revised "furusato nozei" hometown tax donation system.

The ministry concluded again that Izumisano does not qualify after failing to follow a ministry request to limit return gifts to donors to local specialties worth up to 30 pct of the value of each donation.

By Friday, the ministry will notify Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture, of its decision, which was reviewed after a recommendation by a third-party dispute settlement panel that the policy be reconsidered.

The city can file a complaint against the decision with a high court. The dispute is likely to develop into a legal battle.

Izumisano has collected massive donations by offering lavish return gifts, such as gift certificates.
