LDP, Komeito Mark 20th Coalition Anniversary, with Some Friction Observed
Tokyo, Oct. 5 (Jiji Press)--Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its Komeito ally marked the 20th anniversary on Saturday since they formed a coalition government in 1999.
Ahead of the anniversary, secretaries-general and parliamentary affairs chiefs of the two parties agreed at a meeting Wednesday to continue strengthening their alliance.
Meanwhile, Komeito leader Natsuo Yamaguchi met the press to highlight the strong bond between his party and the LDP.
"Over the last 20 years, the LDP and Komeito have been sharing a resolve to stabilize politics in Japan and clear key challenges facing the people," he said in the interview, held on Monday.
The LDP-Komeito alliance was formed in the aftermath of the LDP's humiliating defeat in the 1998 House of Councillors election.
