Tsukuba, Ibaraki Pref., Oct. 5 (Jiji Press)--Japanese esports championships started Saturday at the Tsukuba International Congress Center as part of the annual National Sports Festival for the first time.

Around 600 prefectural representatives gathered at the center in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, to compete in soccer, motor race and puzzle game championships for two days.

"We will fight openly and squarely for esports fans," said Ibaraki representative Aoi Matsubara, 17, making an oath of fair play at the opening ceremony.

Esports joined the prestigious sports festival as part of a cultural program, according to the Ibaraki prefectural government.

Some 15,000 players participated in preliminary competitions held nationwide from March.
