18 Years Sought for Stepfather over Abuse Death of Tokyo Girl

Tokyo, Oct. 7 (Jiji Press)--Public prosecutors on Monday demanded a prison term of 18 years for a 34-year-old stepfather over the abuse death of then five-year-old Yua Funato in Tokyo last year.

In closing arguments at Tokyo District Court, the prosecutors accused the stepfather, Yudai, of mistreating Yua from anger at her disobedience toward him and denounced his actions as "absolutely malicious."

"I'm really, really sorry," a weeping Yudai said in his final statement to the court. The defense claimed that a nine-year term for the accused would be reasonable.

Hearings of his lay judge trial finished on Monday, with the verdict set to be handed down on Oct. 15.

In the high-profile abuse case, the victim's mother, Yuri, 27, was sentenced to eight years in prison last month. She has appealed the sentence.
